Vreid - I Krig
It doesn’t happen very often that I review an album with black metal influences, but with the latest album of Vreid I couldn’t resist it. Vreid started several years ago and already released two albums on Tabu Recordings. Their third album called I Krig is released on Indie Recordings.
The inspiration for this album came from a poem collection of Gunnar Reiss-Andersen which handles about the Norwegian resistance in the second world war. This theme continues on the album within the lyrics and the atmosphere that is created on the album. This results in a very dark album that gives you a certain feeling that could be the same as the people that lived in those times.
One of the things that stands out the most on this album is the blending of two completely different music styles; black metal and rock 'n' roll. This results in an incredible groove in several songs that grab you by the balls and make it almost impossible to sit still. This of course has the effect that you will get pulled in by the album and experience the music much more intenser.
Overall I Krig is an album that leans more in the direction of black metal than rock 'n' roll. That's probably the effect of the typical black metal vocals on the album. Nonetheless there are several great rock 'n' roll influences present in the music. All together I Krig has become a great album with different influences that breathes a dark atmosphere. Especially during the song ‘Dei Daude Steig Av Grav’ Vreid managed to create such darkness you practically could see the horrible things happen in front of you when you close your eyes.
